Effective Dimension of ABA: Meaning and Examples
In the framework described by Baer, Wolf, and Risley, effective means that an application produces a change large enough to have practical value. A measurable change can be statistically or visually detectable yet still be too small to matter in the person’s life.
What “effective” asks
- Did the target behavior change by a meaningful amount?
- Is the change useful in the context where the behavior matters?
- Does the outcome justify the time, effort, risk, and resources involved?
- Do the data show improvement that is sufficient for the defined goal?
The answer depends on the behavior, person, context, measurement system, and agreed goals. There is no universal percentage that makes every intervention effective.
Distinguish effective from related dimensions

A result may meet one dimension without fully meeting another. For example, a large change can be effective in magnitude but not yet generalized to another setting.
The RBT’s contribution
The qualified supervisor evaluates goals, designs procedures, and interprets the overall data. The RBT contributes by implementing the plan accurately, collecting dependable data, documenting relevant variables, reporting concerns, and describing whether a skill is occurring under the conditions specified in the plan.
Accuracy increased from 40% to 45%. Is the intervention effective?
There is not enough information. The change is measurable, but effectiveness requires judgment about the magnitude needed, data quality, repeated performance, the goal, context, and practical value.
A skill reaches criterion in the teaching room but never occurs at home. Which additional dimension is especially relevant?
Generality. Effectiveness concerns meaningful magnitude; generality concerns durability and transfer across relevant conditions.
