Step-by-step: how to become an RBT
1. Check you meet the eligibility rules
You need to be 18 or older and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Most RBTs work for an ABA provider, which will often arrange your training, supervision and background check.
2. Complete your background and registry checks
Criminal background and abuse-registry checks must be completed and passed no more than 180 days before you pay for your RBT application.
3. Complete the 40-hour RBT training
Your training must meet the BACB’s 2026 requirements and take place over no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days. You’ll receive a certificate of completion — keep it for your application. Use our RBT study guide alongside training to lock in each content area.
4. Pass the Initial Competency Assessment
After training, a qualified assessor observes you performing RBT tasks. The assessment must be completed no more than 90 days before you submit your application.
5. Get your Attesting Certificant confirmation
A BACB certificant (such as a BCBA) confirms your eligibility. The confirmation must be no more than 180 days old when you submit, and the attestation form must be signed no more than 90 days before you pay.
6. Apply to the BACB
Create a BACB account, upload your documents and pay the $65 application processing fee. Once approved, you have one year to schedule and pass the exam.
7. Practise, then book the RBT exam
Take our free RBT practice tests and the 80-question mock exam. When you consistently score 80% or more, book through Pearson VUE ($45). See RBT exam format and scoring.
8. Maintain your certification
Once certified, you practise under ongoing supervision and renew on a 2-year cycle. See RBT renewal and recertification.
How long does it take to become an RBT?
Many candidates finish in 4–8 weeks: at least 5 days of training, the competency assessment, BACB application review, then exam preparation and scheduling. Your timeline depends on your training schedule and exam availability.
How much does it cost?
Official BACB and Pearson VUE fees total at least $110 ($65 + $45), plus training and background-check costs. See our full RBT exam cost breakdown.
