Practice questions are most useful when they guide your next study decision. This plan explains how to use an RBT practice exam as a diagnostic tool, review mistakes by content area and build familiarity with the official exam format.
Start With the Current 2026 Exam Outline
The RBT certification examination is based on the RBT Test Content Outline, 3rd Edition. According to the current BACB handbook, the examination contains 85 multiple-choice questions. Seventy-five are scored and 10 are unscored. Candidates have 90 minutes.

The BACB does not publish a fixed raw passing percentage. Treat every practice score as feedback, not as a prediction of your official result.
Step 1: Take a Short Diagnostic Quiz
Begin without notes. Work at a steady pace and record the content area for every question you miss or answer with low confidence. A correct guess should still go into your review log.
Use three labels:
- Knowledge gap: You did not know the relevant term or procedure.
- Application gap: You knew the definition but selected the wrong response in a scenario.
- Reading error: You missed a qualifier such as first, best, most appropriate or under supervision.
Step 2: Review by Content Area
Study the weakest area first, then answer a new set of questions on that topic. Use the site’s RBT exam study guide to move through all six content areas. Compare each lesson with your 40-hour training materials and the official TCO.
Do not memorize answer letters. Explain why the correct option fits and why each distractor does not. This makes practice useful when a new question tests the same concept in a different scenario.
Step 3: Keep a Simple Error Log

Review the log every few days. When the same concept appears repeatedly, return to the source lesson instead of taking more random questions.
A Four-Week RBT Study Schedule
Week 1: Baseline and Data Skills
Take a diagnostic quiz. Review Data Collection and Graphing plus Behavior Assessment. Practice identifying measurement procedures from short scenarios.
Week 2: Teaching Procedures
Focus on Behavior Acquisition, the largest scored content area. Review reinforcement, prompting, fading, shaping, chaining, discrimination training, generalization and maintenance.
Week 3: Reduction, Documentation and Ethics
Review the RBT’s role in implementing behavior plans, documenting services, communicating with supervisors, protecting confidentiality and maintaining professional boundaries.
Week 4: Mixed Practice and Pacing
Complete mixed-topic practice in longer sessions. Use a timer to build comfort with an average pace of a little over one minute per question. Save time at the end to review flagged items.
How to Review Scenario Questions
- Identify the role of the RBT and the supervisor.
- Find the observable behavior or measurable event.
- Determine which procedure or ethical requirement the question is testing.
- Remove options that exceed the RBT’s scope or contradict the written plan.
- Select the best remaining response and explain it in your own words.
When to Move to Longer Practice Sessions
Move from short drills to longer practice when you can explain the underlying concepts without relying on answer patterns. Consistent improvement across multiple content areas is more informative than one high score.
Practice materials cannot guarantee a passing result and should not replace the official BACB documents, your required training or supervisor guidance. Review the current RBT Handbook before scheduling the examination.
